The best way to start the Festive Season… The Muppets Christmas Carol Sing A Long!

To say I was excited about discovering that the Prince of Wales Cinema in Leicester Square was showing a Muppets Christmas Carol sing-a-long is an understatement. You would be closer in saying that there was a lot of high pitch squeaking, immediate buying of three tickets and possibly a little happy dance you would be closer to the truth!

So I dragged Blondie and The Boy with me (the latter being not too impressed that I was making him come too!) The seats were unallocated so we rocked up 30 mins before the time on our ticket only to find the line going round the cinema already! The buzz was AMAZING and everyone was in a fantastic mood!

Once we where in we noticed we had some special guests…

The Puppets Luther and Bruce! – excuse the bad photo we where in a dark cinema after all! They have their own youtube channel here

They where AWESOME!

Once the film started we booed, cheered, heckled and sang our little hearts out (including the grumpy boy much to his horror!). It was definitely the best way to get our festive season started! Think we have a new Christmas tradition!

My handmade Xmas tree decorations

Posted on

My department does a secret santa each year at our department lunch. Our theme was Christmas Decorations for £5 and I got my manager – PRESSURE! I wanted to find something child-friendly and something I knew she would enjoy. I also needed a present for The Boy’s parents and I do always try to make them something but I was stumped! Lucky Pintrest saved the day … Peg doll tree decorations!

I decided to make 2 different kinds… Super heroes for my manager (and her little boys) and Christmas themed ones for everyone else!

I managed to get a pack of wooden peg dolls off Etsy which turned up unbelievably quickly! so all that was next was to draw out the designs, screw in a mini eye hook pins and get messy with some paint…

Here’s they are finished and on my tree…

I really enjoyed doing this and everyone seemed to really like them (including my Manager’s boys phew!) and no one seemed to mind too much that the snowman looked like a Doctor Who baddie!  I even had time to make a Buffy peg doll for Blondie

I still seem to have quite a lot left over any suggestions on what to make next!?

My new monthly treat…

One of my favourite etsy stores Janine Basil has just started a fantastic hair accessory of the month club which I just jumped at the chance to subscribe to as my GlossyBox has become really quite disappointing.

I’ve previously bought a couple of hairbands from Janine – the Vixen and the KAPOW, but there are just SO many to pick from this really is the perfect solution. I get 8 hair clips and 4 headbands over the year and each month there will be an extra something, which could include a necklace, brooch or maybe even a bonus hair clip!

I was just so excited about receiving my first box this month…

I got a fabulous exclamation hair clip, a glitter star brooch and a really lovely hand written card which is a sweet touch!

Best present I ever gave to myself! Fingers crossed this bad boy is in my next parcel (HA)

My Very Wicked Halloween

I seem to have left you all waiting with bated breath to see my Halloween costume so here it is…
IMG_8694

I think it was pretty successful! It was definitely the most demanding of all my costumes to date as there was a huge amount of making/crafting this look!

The cape was made by my wonderful Mother, I did offer to help (many times) but as I’m not allowed near her sewing machine I was demoted to onlooker/tea maker/model. It’s so fantastic I can’t stop wearing it around the flat!

The horns where a paper mache/spray paint and glitter glue creation that may have been much messier than it probably should have been. I followed the methods I posted from my previous post.

Add in the hair and make-up and I think the end result was pretty effective!

IMG_8689IMG_8692(doesn’t The Boy look good as The Huntsman!?)

It wasn’t just me who looked amazing we had a whole flat full of freaky costumes…

My Halloween countdown is starting NOW

My Halloween countdown is starting NOW

As you may have guessed… I LOVE Halloween!

I think last years total of Halloween dress-ups (including a fancy dress bake sale at work) came to a grand total of 5 – which admittedly is pretty excessive but it was awesome!

This year I am FINALLY being allowed to have a Halloween party so its costume planing time! We’ve gone for a Grimm theme. Fairytales, stories even Disney as long as its gory and NOT Mean Girls slutty! So I’m thinking of channeling my inner wickedness and go with the fabulous Maleficent!

Maleficent_by_chill07

As always I started with a Primani sweep and a few hours happily pinning away on Pintrest and have come up with an action plan. Looks like I need to focus on 4 sections of this costume… dress, cape, horns and make-up.

I found a dress with a pleathery top and a chiffony skirt that I’m using as a base item which I’ve ripped and roughed up a bit. I’m going to make a longer skirt with my extra material from past outfits and vines creeping up my legs (hinting at her spell in the Disney film!)

I this I’m going to need a belt to hide all the layers and have been looking at these on ASOS that might work perfectly…
image4xl image1xlThe cape is the big thing… this is going to involve a wee bit of help from some one much wiser and more skilled (my lovely mother) so this is still a work in process – fingers crossed!

With the horns I’ve found this fantastic blog Chrix Design who might love fancy dress more than me! She has a great tutorial on how to make horns really easily using foil as a base looks simple enough (famous last words!) Thankfully my lovely housemate has offered to help me!  Hopefully she will save me from a paper mache hell!

Lastly MAKE-UP which is where the wonderful world of Pintrest comes into its own. I think I’m going to play around with some different ideas but all using purple, green and black… these will be my inspiration!

I’ll have my lovely photographer at hand (otherwise known as The Boy) and will get photos of the finished thing up so you can see if I managed to pull it off or not!?

Before I go on a slightly random tangent have you seen the photos of the beautiful Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pam from True Blood) as Malifeficent in the new TV series Once Upon a Time?
122MaleficentCTVOUATIf she’s only half a sarky as her character in True Blood it will be amazing!

The day The Boy and I learnt to Lindy Hop

The day The Boy and I learnt to Lindy Hop

Ever since The Boy and I went to the Goodwood Revival in 2010 I’ve been wanting to learn how to dance (The Boy was a little bit more hesitant) Now we’ve been to a few most vintage events and I always end up watching all the amazing dancing not able to really join in as it looks so intimidating!

I’ve been looking into weekly dance lessons and came across an all day session hosted by Swing Patrol . I mentioned it in passing to The Boy (not thinking he would say yes) and before I knew it he’d booked the tickets and we where off to brick lane to learn to Lindy Hop!

To say we where nervous was an understatement. I was going to have to learn to follow – to give up control – not something I am particularly fond of and The Boy was going to have to dance in a room full of strangers without any dutch courage! Before we even got to the bloody venue I had already fallen over (it happens a lot) so I wasn’t too hopeful being able to control my limbs! BUT we turned up and where instantly put at ease (well sort of) by our lovely dance teachers Saul and Simone (watch them at work here) got us to warm up doing silly dance moves and then our hours of dancing started!

The day was broken up in to three sections…

12.30-1.45pm – Introduction to SIX BEAT swing

15min break

2.00-3.15pm – Introduction to EIGHT BEAT Lindy Hop

15min break

3.30-4.45pm – Introduction to CHARLESTON

It was intense, quick and boiling but the best fun we’ve had in ages! Think I didn’t stop giggling from start to finish and even The Boy was starting to get a grips with it! I didn’t think I would like the Charleston as it was at the end of a long day and looked so complicated but it was so much fun. I’m so glad we did it! I would like to say we looked like this by the end…

…but I think it will take a LOT more practice for that!

Saul did mention that we should do some social dancing which sounds terrifying but fun!  Might be our next venture into dancing…?

He did also talk about watching the film Hellzapoppin for inspiration, which I’ve never heard of before but after this clip I will be hunting it down!

I’m in LOVE with my new Collectif dresses

Posted on

A month or so ago I saw on Facebook that Collectif was doing a 50% sale… as you can guess lots of girl squeaks happened. I was devastated to find out that it went live when I was on a research day for work so would be in bookshops instead of at my desk! Thankfully with the help of 3G I managed to get my hands on a couple of fantastic dresses!

The fabulous Georgina HorneI’ve  known of Collectif for a while as they have a great shop in the Camden market but I was always a little hesitant because I’ve found that, with some modern vintage clothes,  “plus sizes” don’t always go together well – add in the fact that I’m so tall the waists of most dresses sit under my bust –  it’s never a good look!  It wasn’t until I saw the gorgeous Georgina Horne‘s facebook page filled with photos of her in all her dresses she’s got from there (and this most recent blog post on Fuller Figure Fuller Bust  about how Collectif have taken over her wardrobe) that I decided to take advantage of the discount and add to my ever-expanding wardrobe!

The first dress I bought was already in the sale but as it’s named after one of my favourite characters I had to buy the Rizzo Dress!

Packed with style and sass, just like the lady we named this dress after, the Rizzo is a fitted pencil dress with twist detailing to the bust. Available in Green, Lilac, Red, and Plain Black, this style is full of 1950s charm, with cute ¾ sleeves, turned up and buttoned to perfection!

The next dress was the Sarong Blue Hibiscus Dress. I had to buy it as I love the cut, pattern and the baboo detailing – so basically everything!!!

Tiki is definitely in, and look, it’s summer again! What a perfect combination! Embody Hawaiian inspired glamour in our Sarong Dress, now available in our fantastic Blue Hibiscus print! This flattering wrap design is completed by a belt to cinch in the waist and lovely gathered detail to the front. Essential for hot summer nights!

Sarong Dress Blue Hibiscus

I’m building up to purchasing one of their circle skirt dresses but for now I’m more than happy to have these two in my wardrobe! The fit is fantastic on both and the skirt length is still a good length on me stopping just above the knee! Can’t wait to wear them somewhere soon!

I managed to finally grab The Boy to get him to take a couple of photos of me in these beauties! Bear in mind that this was after a day long of dancing so my hair is scraped back but I still love these photos! (will explain more about the dancing in the next post!)

I’m already looking to see what can be the next addition… bye-bye next month’s pay check!
